Women must work an additional 64 days into the new financial year to earn as much as male workers earn in 12 months. This statistic is based on average weekly earnings for full time workers. The Australian Bureau of Statistics recently announced the average weekly earning trend data to February 2012. The gap between women and men’s earnings is a staggering 17.4%. And that’s the best interpretation! Women are over represented in part-time and insecure jobs, which results in the income gap being much wider in real terms. There are a host of factors to explain this, but the key reason is that women’s paid work is massively undervalued because of women’s unpaid work. Consider this fact: men with children earn almost double what women with children earn over their lifetime.

The good news is that low paid workers — especially women and immigrant workers — are fighting back!

Get inspired with practical stories from the rank and file. Unionists who work as teachers and other sites of struggle will share their stories. Pay Justice Action will not only identify the problems but present solutions.
