From the twinkle of the Pleiades to the arrival of the English, the new CD, A Makahiki Carol, explores the history and culture of Hawai`i’s winter holiday using storytelling, chant, and song. Leilehua Yuen and her husband, Manu Josiah, have created a holiday gift which will entertain and educate through many months of the year.
The seed for A Makahiki Carol was planted by the late Nona Beamer, when she asked Leilehua to help with a holiday presentation. “They’ll have lots of Christmas carols,” she said, “But I want to give them something Hawaiian. So, would you please write a Makahiki carol for them?” The resulting song has since become a signature piece for Leilehua and Manu’s holiday performances, geared for keiki through kūpuna.
A Makahiki Carol is the first time the original material in their presentations has been recorded.
Manu and Leilehua, and Maile Pahaka, one of their ki`i hula (hula puppets) will hold a special performance and CD signing at Basically Books on Saturday, November 26, at 4:00 pm, and sign their CDs. 961-0144 for more information.
