During the post war and McCarthy 1950s in the shadows below the Brooklyn Bridge we watch an admirable dock worker, Eddie Carbone, take in two of his wife's relatives, illegal immigrants from Italy. They move in among Eddie's forsaken wife and his teenage niece, whom he has raised and whom he loves, he thinks, as a daughter. When his niece falls for one of the immigrants, a monstrous change creeps up on Eddie as he struggles to keep his family and his world intact. Not even the wise and compassionate neighborhood lawyer can persuade Eddie to let the girl go. Eddie can't keep from revealing himself and betraying his neighborhood, his culture, and his family as he fulfills his pitiful destiny. Judgment, respect, sexual dynamics, hopes, and fears are at the core of this intensely absorbing drama, a tragedy in the traditional form and a modern classic.
