Alive by Her Own Hand: Living Women Artists & Current Musical Movements, a vibrant concert of jazz, unusual song, and avant garde instrumentals, presented by female creator/performers from around the world, will take place at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 22 at Slosberg Music Center, Brandeis University, as the opening concert of a weekend-long “fest-conference” organized by the Women’s Studies Research Center. Artists include Boston University composition faculty member Ketty Nez (http://people.bu.edu/knez/), Eva Kendrick (http://www.evakendrick.com/home.cfm), saxophonist Florencia Gonzalez (http://www.florenciagonzalez.com/), California-based electric violinist/poet/performance artist Mary Lou Newmark (http://www.greenangelmusic.com), Chinese pianist/composer Livia Lin, fusion electric bassist Jodi Stevens, and vocalist/keyboardist innovator Tamara Cashour (http://www.tamaracashour.com/). Composers will provide commentary to open listeners' understanding of contexts in which the music was created. A “talk-back” with the artists will be held, over a chocolate buffet, following the concert.
