The America’s Cardboard Cup Regatta is hosted each year at Main Beach Park in Crystal Lake. The event was originally created by members of the Crystal Lake Yacht Club to provide people with a day of fun enjoying Crystal Lake. Over the years it has grown and is now considered by people worldwide as the world championship of cardboard boat racing. Best of all proceeds from the America’s Cardboard Cup Regatta benefit a variety of local charities.
Each year the Regatta hosts between 180 & 200 boats and 4,000 to 6,000 spectators. Past entries have included the Star Wars Death Star, Lunar Landing on the Lake, Cardboard Knievel, the Flintstones, the Batmobile and a 700lb Cardboard Castle complete with a dragon. Participants have been hosted from all over the Chicago region and from as far away as Germany, Australia and New Zealand.
