AREQUIPA

Arequipa is a province of great cultural and geographical wealth. The archaeological remains at Toro Muerto and the remains of rock art in the caves of Sumbay date from 5000-8000 BC Later in the fifteenth century, the regional cultures of the Collaguas and cabins were annexed to the Inca empire. According to the chronicler Cieza de Leon, "the healthiest and most pleasant of the villages of Peru." The city of Arequipa was founded in 1540 by Spanish conqueror Francisco Pizarro. Due to its strategic location in the mineral trade route between Potosi and Spain, many Hispanics of Basque origin settled in the comfortable land.

Cradle of precursors and Peruvian revolutionary heroes such as Juan Pablo Guzman and Mariano Vizcardo and Melgar, Arequipa is famous for its regionalism and pride of its inhabitants. The inauguration in 1870 from rail to Puno, Cusco and Costa (Mollendo) boosted its development, turning it into a vital center of communications and commerce in the south.

CATHEDRAL OF THE CITY OF AREQUIPA

PLAZA DE ARMAS DE LA CIUDAD DE AREQUIPA

SANTA CATALINA MONASTERY
Built to house the daughters of the most distinguished families in the city, the monastery was inaugurated on October 2, 1580 under the patronage of St. Catherine of Siena as a center of absolute closure, and so remained until August 15, 1970 .
The convent of Santa Catalina occupies an area of approximately 20 thousand square meters, is divided into neighborhoods distributed similarly to the first neighborhoods of Arequipa. Very different architectural features rooms. One of the rooms has been adapted as a gallery to display some of the canvasses of the Cusco, Arequipa and Quito. CHIVAY AND COLCA VALLEY
In Chivay, capital of the province of Caylloma, are the hot springs of La Calera. The busiest road rises from Arequipa by a winding road at the foot of Chachani, then go down to the so-called "Valley of Wonders," for its beautiful landscapes and villages surrounded by a variety of platforms and inhabited by the descendants of the ancient Collaguas and cabins. The first town reached is to Chivay, where there is a wide range of tourist services, and then Cabanaconde Cruz del Condor lookout point from where you can appreciate the majestic flight of these beautiful birds and depth of Colca Canyon, in which you can go river rafting in rafts, canoes and kayaks.
