A Furman University biology professor, Dr. Wade Worthen, will discuss the problem of "Intelligent Design" at the next meeting of the Upstate Chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, Thursday, May 25, 6:30 p. m., at the Prime Sirloin Buffet and Bakery, 1032 Woodruff Road in Greenville.
 
The restaurant is near Greenville Mall, on the opposite side of the road (see directions below). The meal costs approximately $10. The meeting is free and open to the public.
 
On the Furman faculty since 1988, Dr. Worthen is concerned about efforts to require Intelligent Design to be taught in public school science classes in South Carolina. His B. S. in biology is from Bucknell University; his M. S. and Ph. D. in ecology are from Rutgers University. Some 30 of his peer-reviewed articles have been published in professional journals, he has presented papers to 33 scientific meetings, and he has received eight research grants during his Furman career.
 
He is a member of The South Carolinians for Science Education (SCSE), an organization of parents, businesspeople, educators, students, scientists, and clergy, dedicated to improving the quality and defending the integrity of science education in the public schools in the state. Membership is free.
 
Your chapter officers are exploring the possibility of a joint public meeting with SCSE because of shared concern about keeping church and state separate in the public schools.

Directions -- Coming off I-85 northhbound towards Greenville exit at 51A  Woodruff Rd. and turn left.  The Prime Sirloin will be on your left across from the Greenville Mall.  If you are coming southbound from Spartanburg on I-85 exit to your right at 51A Woodruff Rd. (there are three exits C, B, & A) take A and turn right.  Those in Greenville should go to Woodruff Rd. across from the Greenville Mall and very close to Lowe's.
