Forest Forays have been developed to provide extended opportunities to learn about and experience nature's glory, utilizing Bernheim's Bean Property in the research forest. Forest Forays are a unique opportunity to visit secluded natural areas with scientists, botanists, geologists and other specialized instructors, a chance to bring together nature lovers with skilled interpreters and experts, possibly creating new dialogues and innovative ideas regarding our natural world. Winter Plants; 10:00 a.m. noon. Despite the lack of sunshine and warmth, plants have developed adaptations that allow them to survive through the cold winter months. Join us for this guided hike in the research forest to learn why winter can be the best time to appreciate trees, how mosses and lichens thrive in the cold, and how to spot the first signs of spring before winter has ended. This hike offers something for every plant enthusiast, from beginners to seasoned botanists. Winter Raptors; 1:00 3:00 p.m. The varieties of habitat at Bernheim attract a diverse array of winter migrants, perhaps none as inspiring as the raptors. This guided hike leads to an observation spot used to view eagles and other raptors that make Bernheim their home during the cold months of winter. Along the way, you will learn about Bernheim's winter bird "residents" and why these migrants are attracted to this large forest block. Forest Forays take place at Bernheim's Bean House, directions and other pertinent information will be available upon registration. Plan to spend the full day or a half a day in nature. Bring your lunch, good hiking boots and remember to pack it all out when you head home. Advanced registration required; includes one or both programs. Call 502.955.8512.
