BHSU to celebrate Constitution Day September 19, 2011

Constitution Day 2011 will be celebrated on the Black Hills State University campus Monday, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. in the David B. Miller Student Union Jacket Legacy Room.

Constitution day will be commemorated by remembering the events of ten years ago--the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

In the aftermath of those attacks, the federal government took actions that some Americans have labeled unconstitutional. Eric John Nies of Hood & Nies, P.C. will give a presentation titled “A Legal Perspective on the War on Terror.” In this presentation, Nies will review some of the more controversial American legal developments of the last decade, concentrating on the surveillance portions of the Patriot Act and the Guantanamo detainees. He will also give his opinion as to why the developments have been so contentious and controversial.

Nies was born and raised in the Black Hills, graduating from Spearfish High School in 1998. He received a B.A. with highest honors in History and Political Science in 2002 and a J.D. in 2005, both from the University of South Dakota. Since 2005, he has practiced at Hood & Nies, P.C., in which he is a partner. He specializes in estate planning, business law, and civil litigation. He, his wife, Michelle, and son, Elijah, live in rural Belle Fourche.
