Novelist Charles Condomine has two problems on his hands: his late first wife Elvira, whose spirit is now haunting his home following a seance, and who appears only to him; and his second wife Ruth, who is the target of Elvira's ghostly torture. This popular play broke box-office records in world War II-era London, and was adapted as the musical High Spirits starring Rex Harrison. A 2009 revival on Broadway netted a Tony Award for Angela Lansbury.
