Students for International Development hosts the annual Hunger Banquet—2008 marks the 18th year—to raise awareness among BYU students about global poverty and wealth inequality. To make the event experience special, all event attendees are randomly seated in one of three seating areas representative of high, middle, and low income areas of the world and eat a corresponding meal. Therefore, most attendees (about 70%) sit on the floor and eat a meager meal of rice and beans. Some (about 20%) are seated in chairs around the outside of the room and eat a modest, one-plate meal. And a few (about 10%) attendees are seated at fancy tables and receive a lavish meal. Live, culturally diverse entertainment and a guest speaker further enhance the evening’s experience.
