Overview: This fall, the Monterey Museum of Art will present the inaugural installation of new works by Carrie Mae Weems. Using photography and text, Weems creates works that explore issues of gender, race and the role of the artist in society. In The Museum Project, Weems extends this investigation to the realm of the art museum itself by photographing herself confronting the facades of art institutions around the world. The monumental photographs heighten the presence of the museum buildings Weems faces. In her words: “Both projects consider the power of space and the role of architecture in the construction of power - as always, my stance as artist is, in some small way, to consider, challenge and confront aspects of power using my own body. Often standing outside of these institutions, I pose as narrator, guide, muse, standing in for the many artists who are often left in the same position.” This exhibition is done in collaboration with California State University Monterey Bay and is supported in part by a Grant from the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am hosted by the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, General Operating Support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and the Walker Foundation.
