Cash Box Kings with Joel Paterson

Saturday night. Jan. 31, 2009, the Crystal Corner will feature an evening of gritty Chicago Blues by the Cash Box Kings, featuring Joel Paterson on guitar. Come early at 9:30 pm, and stay late!

The Cash Box Kings are a Midwestern group dedicated to carrying on the spirit of the 1940's and '50s post-war Chicago blues sound, as well as the delta blues music of the 1920's and '30s. The band pays homage to Chess and Sun Records luminaries such as Little Walter, Muddy Waters, and Jimmy Rogers, along with lesser-known but high-quality musicians such as Robert Nighthawk; they also delve into the Mississippi Delta sounds of bluesmen Charley Patton, Son House, Fred McDowell and R.L. Burnside.

A former Madisonian, Joel Paterson is one of the most respected guitarists on the Windy City music scene today. The blues/country/rockabilly jazz guitar wizard will be making a rare Madison appearance with the Cash Box Kings at the Crystal Corner. For the last 10 years, working out of Chicago, Paterson has toured and recorded with artists such as David "Honey Boy" Edwards (one of the last remaining Delta bluesicians), Wanda Jackson (who will soon be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame), Devil in a Woodpile (Bloodshot Records), Carl "Sonny" Leyland, The Four Charms (Hi-Style), Kelly Hogan (Bloodshot Records), and his own Joel Paterson Trio, now known as The Modern Sounds (Ventrella Records).
