The University of Virginia's McIntire Department of Music presents a recital by Ru-Pei Yeh, cello and Helen Huang, piano, on Thursday, February 17th at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall on UVA's historic lawn. The recital is free and open to the public.
Ru-Pei Yeh, cellist for the New York Philharmonic, has performed as a recitalist in her native Taiwan and in the U.S. Yeh is a founding member of the Formosa Quartet, has served as acting principal cello of the San Diego Symphony and the San Diego Opera, in addition to performing with a string quartet of principal players from the San Diego Symphony. Ms. Yeh has made solo appearances with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, National Taiwan Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, North Carolina School of the Arts’s International Music Program Orchestra, and Kuan-Jen School Orchestra, and is the winner of numerous competitions. Ms. Yeh, who has been performing professionally since the age of 10, moved to the U.S. at 13 to study with Orlando Cole at the Temple Preparatory School. She received her bachelor of music degree from the New England Conservatory under the tutelage of Laurence Lesser, and her master’s degree from The Juilliard School in 2004, studying with Joel Krosnick. She received her artist diploma from Juilliard in 2006.
Taiwanese-American pianist Helen Huang, was first discovered by the New York Philharmonic and Maestro Kurt Masur upon winning the Young People's Competition resulting in engagements with the prestigious New York Philharmonic and a recording contract with the Teldec record label. Known for immaculate technique and eloquent sensitivity, Ms. Huang has enjoyed to date a multi-faceted career as a soloist and chamber music player and can claim years of experience with an impressive list of performances with such orchestras as the Cleveland Orchestra, the National Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Saint Louis Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Cincinnati Symphony, the Montreal Symphony, the Colorado Symphony, and the Fort Worth Symphony. Abroad she has appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, the London Philharmonic, the Israel Philharmonic, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and the KBS Symphony in Seoul, Korea. Her wide-ranging conductor collaborations include Kurt Masur, Lorin Maazel, Mariss Jansons, Leonard Slatkin, Paavo Jarvi, Jahja Ling, Herbert Blomstedt, Giancarlo Guerrero, and Thomas Wilkins.
During their residency at the University both Ms. Yeh and Ms Huang will conduct public master classes featuring students from the University of Virginia. The piano masterclass will be held on Friday, February 18th, and the cello master class will take place on Saturday February 19th.
