Join the Chatham County Arts Council for an evening of truly sustainable cinema as an exceptional array of North Carolina films shine a green light on the silver screen for sustainable agriculture and energy.

At the heart of the event is a screening of Greensboro filmmaker Matt Barr’s “Hungry for Green,” which explores the ties between agricultural sustainability and world hunger. The film promises to illuminate viewers on how the United States’ dependence on petroleum is linked to the delicate condition of the global food supply.

“Hungry for Green” is narrated by former Senator George McGovern, who was also the inaugural director of the Food for Peace program during the Kennedy administration. Throughout his public service career, McGovern has worked extensively to address issues of hunger and poverty around the world. This film works to educate viewers on the key role of sustainable agriculture in global economic development.

Award-winning documentarian Ken Burns says of the film, “This is an important film that underscores the urgency of achieving agriculture sustainability to help alleviate hunger and protect our natural environment.”

September’s Sustainable Cinema event will also include films from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University and from other North Carolina filmmakers. A panel discussion will follow the screenings.

ChathamArts is accepting submissions for short films by North Carolina filmmakers that address sustainability and environmental issues. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, Aug 25.
