A photographic fantasy, "Portia Polar Bear's Birthday Wish" introduces young children to one of nature's most charismatic and beautiful animals, the polar bear. Cox and author Margie K. Carroll teamed up to tell the heart-warming tale of a polar bear cub who comes to realize she isn't like everybody else in the arctic. Her mother tries to comfort Portia by telling her that she is "perfectly normal" as she seeks reassurance and confirmation from many arctic friends. "Portia Polar Bear's Birthday Wish" inspires acceptance of every child's unique characteristics. The 48 page hard cover book is for children 3 to 7 years, and only $19.95.
The book's story was inspired by Cox' images. Every fall for close to 20 years, Cox has packed his gear, bundled up, and headed north to the Artic cold of Churchill, Manitoba to photograph the polar bears that congregate there. The bears wait for the bay to freeze so they can go out on the ice to hunt seals. Cox has long volunteered his time and his international reputation as a skilled and ethical wildlife photographer, to communicate the work of Polar Bears International. Based in Bozeman, the non-profit organization is dedicated to the worldwide conservation of polar bears through research, stewardship and education. A portion of the sale from each book will be donated to them.
An award-winning photographer, Cox has an impressive resume of successes. His work has been featured in hundreds of publications, in galleries like the Natural History Museum of London, and dozens of books. He produced two cover stories for National Geographic, in 2002 and 2005, both on owls.
The Lightwriter Gallery inside F-11 Photographic Supplies will be featuring Cox's stunning polar bear images through the month of December. Dan has donated a beautiful canvas print that can be bid on in a silent auction to benefit Polar Bears International during the Christmas Stroll.
