While looking at the works of many master collagists we will investigate a variety of materials techniques. Starting with the basics we will review cutting, tearing and layering, papers, glues, wax and various substrates. Emphasis will be placed on learning the elements of design beginning with creating a photomontage after artist/designer Marianne Brandt. Photographs of the works of Joseph Cornell will be closely examined to learn about his themes and the many building techniques he used to create his infamous boxes. The politics and sentimentality of the collages and assemblages of Betye Saar and Merit Oppenhiem will inspire thoughtful two-dimensional projects.

Workshops in painting, collage and assemblage are offered in my studio for individuals and small groups from beginners to artists of all levels. Each hands on studio session is enriched by demonstration and guided looking at images from modern and contemporary art.
