No. 41b, Underground Cellar Tian Shan No. 2 Borough, Zun Yi Road, Hong Qiao, Shanghai
Shanghai, Shanghai

Its hard to imagine that a modern, bustling US city and China?s beautiful and historic alpine landscapes in remote Yunnan province could have anything in common, but talented composer Jeremy Jennings takes his influence from these two very important parts of his life. Jeremy?s music has its roots in the western classical tradition, but is very much influenced by the music of the Naxi tradition of Yunnan, where he now resides. Each of his most recent works has an emphasis on solo melody and has been created for its performer with their personality in mind. Explaining his music philosophy, Jeremy says ?With a single musical line there are no harmonies to hide behind, no textural effects to disguise a momentary lack of inspiration. Solo music forces both the composer and the performer to focus in a way few other situations do.?

Musicians Lauren McGuire Jennings (clarinet, xiao) and Yang Zemin (flute, xiao and erhu) of the Lijiang Studio will be performing the music of Jeremy Jennings for one night only at our Ruby Red cellar. In addition, they bring with them fantastic paintings by American artist Cameron Harvey. There is a very circular relationship between the music of Jeremy Jennings and the art of Cameron Harvey ? he has written in response to Cameron?s painting, and she has painted in response to Jeremy?s music.

This event is completely free of charge.
