Byington's narrative landscapes, densely rendered in the style of nineteenth-century illustrated books, recall minimalist painting, surrealist collage, assemblage, and psychedelic works from the 1950s and 1960s in the San Francisco Bay Area where the artist is based. In his obsessive attention to surface detail, creating optically captivating works through a complex process of drawing, photocopying, printing, painting, scraping and glazing, Byington has been linked with 'finish fetish' artists such as John McCracken and Ken Price.
