Contemporary painter Dawn Okoro is calling on the community to support their artists. Okoro?s third solo art exhibition ?Creation,? will open at Gachet Gallery in Dallas, Texas on May 5, 2006. A portion of the proceeds and all donations from the show will benefit B.L.I.N.D. (Beautiful Love Incorporated Nonprofit Development ). B.L.I.N.D. is headed by multiple Grammy winner Erykah Badu who is confirmed to make a guest appearance at the show. B.L.I.N.D.?s mission is to improve communities and the world though art, love, education, caring, and sharing. The headquarters is found at the historic Black Forest Theater in south Dallas where Badu grew up. The theater hosts first class shows and productions featuring local and world-renowned talent. Educational programs, culturally dynamic events, and forums are also held there.
In August 2005, Okoro held an art fundraiser to raise funds for Thoughtful House Center for Children. The show was a success in that it helped bring awareness to the community and raised funds to aid a local family of an autistic child. Okoro herself knows the hardships of this disability first hand. Her ten year old brother is a child of autism. Okoro plans to bring the same kind of awareness to the community for B.L.I.N.D.
At her most recent show ?At Risk,? Okoro destroyed one of her own paintings. Though her paintings are now safe, she felt the need to destroy a piece as a demonstration to garner more support for the local art community. Not only did ?At Risk? serve as a platform to bring attention to the visual arts community, but it brought awareness and served as a fundraiser for Badu?s nonprofit, B.L.I.N.D.
The ?Creation? exhibit consists of acrylic paintings inspired by fashion and American pop culture. Okoro is attempting to bring back the support for visual arts and artists
everywhere. The community is encouraged to come out and support this cause. Show opens May 5, 2006, 7-10pm at Gachet Gallery, 1804 Lower Greenville Ave;
Dallas, Texas. The opening reception will include a performance by Geno Young who has written and produced music for Badu and other artists. The ?Creation? exhibit will be on display throughout the month of May as part of Gachet?s ?Artist of the Month? selection. Interviews with Okoro and Badu will be possible on the day of the show.
