Port Townsend, Washington 98368

USO Building at Fort Worden State Park. These talks will include an overview of regional geology by an internationally known expert, followed by discussion of a small study by a local student-geologist. First, a presentation by Brian Atwater of USGS, who will describe the Cascadia subduction zone and the paleoseismic event of 1700, including evidence of local effects from that massive earthquake. After a short intermission, Ron Tognazzini or Marley Iredale (or both) will discuss Iredale's work at Discovery Bay where there are 9 tsunami-like sand beds dated with the past 2100 yrs. Iredale was a Sequim high school student when he did this work, which earned him national awards at the time. Tognazzini was his teacher.
