Join biologist and photographer John Winnie, Jr. as he shares his amazing photographic portfolio created from images made during his three trips to Afghanistan's remote Wakhan Corridor where he studied Marco Polo argali (mountain sheep) for the Wildlife Conservation Society in 2007 and 2008. In addition to obtaining biological data, Winnie gained insights into the culture and lifestyles of the tribal peoples of the region - insights that are at least as important in building an argali management plan as the biological data.
Winnie earned a PhD in biology at Montana State University studying wolf - elk behavioral dynamics, then went on to do a post-doc analyzing African Buffalo habitat use. In October 2007 he began work for the Wildlife Conservation Society studying argali in Afghanistan and subsequently made three trips to the Wakhan between 2007 and 2008. His research will help in crafting a regional management plan for this iconic species.
