The Human Rights Torch Relay is arriving in Boston on March 30th, 2008. The Human Rights Torch Relay (HRTR) is an international year-long event traveling across six continents to major cities around the world. We are bringing attention to human rights abuses in China that have increased since China was chosen as the 2008 Olympic host. We believe that the Olympic Games and crimes against humanity cannot coexist in China.
We are alarmed about the widespread and severe persecution of Christians, Uighur Muslims, Tibetan Buddhists, Falun Gong, democracy advocates, journalists and lawyers. In addition to these persecutions, the Chinese Communist Party supports other totalitarian regimes in their assaults on their citizens - in Burma, Darfur and North Korea.
We are calling upon China to stop all state-sanctioned murder, torture, unlawful arrests and detention, and all violations of the International Human Rights Law and to release all prisoners of conscience.
On March 30th, we will have a symbolic marathon from Hopkinton MA to Boston Common. Ironman Paul Guzzi, an Elementary physical education teacher from Hardy Elementary School in Wellesley, MA will be our athletic ambassador carrying the torch the entire marathon distance ending at the Human Rights Torch Rally on Boston Common. With your support for the Human Rights Torch Relay, together we can bring an end to these horrific crimes against humanity.
