This 1 day practical course aims to equip you with the skills to plan walks, and the confidence to strike out off the beaten track. We will focus on how the map relates to the land around you, enabling you to plot routes, visualise what's ahead and avoid feeling lost.
We'll cover the key aspects of map reading - setting, contours and scale - and basic use of the compass, while you confidently plot our way out of urban Hadfield into open countryside. Once in the hills, we will also consider Rights of Way legislation, how they're shown on the map and what you need to know, and The Countryside Code.
The day will finish in a local real ale pub where we'll review and celebrate the fact that navigation is no longer a dark art for you.
Map Required: OS1 Dark Peak 1:25000 scale map. We can provide if you need please let us know.
