PHILLY CHIP MUSIC ARTISTS TAKE THE STAGE AT
NEW YORK CITY’S I/O CHIP MUSIC SHOWCASE MARCH 7th
***
Live performances by Animalstyle, Chipocrite, Rhinostrich, and Iron Curtain
New York City’s monthly chip music and visual showcase, I/O, hosts Philly chip artists Animalstyle, Chipocrite, Rhinostrich, and Iron Curtain at its art and music event on Monday, March 7th, 7:30 PM at Niagara Bar (112 Avenue A on the corner of Ave A and 7th St.). Performances will feature an innovative combination of Nintendo Game Boys, Sega Genesis Systems, keyboards, and electric bass. This free show is sponsored by the Antagonist Art Movement and presented by Alphabet City Soup.
Chip musicians utilize computer chips in vintage computers, keyboards, and video games to create raw, gritty electronic music. Visual “chip” artists use computers to project graphics on a screen behind the performers, “playing” their art live to accompany the music. Some chip musicians sing or play conventional musical instruments in their live sets. The songs are pre-programmed but mixed and improvised live. No two performances are the same.
Animalstyle
Animalstyle’s Joey Mariano creates an approach to chip music heavy on improvisation. Using a Game Boy foot controller in combination with an 8bit fuzz pedal, Animalstyle mashes together the conventional and unconventional – their sound is unabashedly unique. On his more current projects, Mariano incorporates Sega Genesis into his recordings and produces NES cartridge albums with No Carrier.
Chipocrite
Paul Weinstein – former bassist of Philly super group MJ Project – uses simple Game Boy technology to create audio masterpieces. By combining the nostalgic video game sounds of his childhood and complex modern music influences, Chipocrite is a top Philly chip music draw.

Rhinostrich
Using Little Piggy Tracker to create incredibly unique, hardcore dance beats, Rhinostrich needs only a pair of GP32X’s to create his music. His beats range from slow, earthy and mellow to upbeat and dizzyingly fast.
Iron Curtain
Samuel Abram arms his Game Boy with an LSDJ cart and fires a sonic assault of selections from his album "Saturday Thirst".
