Host: Virginia Trimble, UCI
Join us for this afternoon physics seminar series. It's free and open to anyone. For homeschoolers, students, retirees, and anyone else who has an afternoon available. Dr. Kip Thorne, author of the book "Black Holes and Time Warps: Einstein's Outrageous Legacy" is the speaker, and he will talk to us about space and time warps in the Universe.
Program:
1) Arrival of guests - 3 PM
2) Lecture: 3:30-4:30 PM
3) Questions and Answers: 4:30-5 PM
There is a "warped side" to our universe, consisting of objects and phenomena that are made solely or largely from warped spacetime. Examples are the big-bang singularity, black holes, and cosmic strings. Supercomputer simulations (numerical relativity) are beginning to revolutionize our understanding of what COULD exist on our universe's warped side; and gravitational-wave observations (LIGO, LISA, ...) will reveal what phenomena actually DO exist there, and how they behave.
Join us for free. Seating limited, so arrive early. Questions and answers will follow the discussion, and food and beverage is served afterwards in a reception with the speaker.
