The University of Virginia Klezmer Ensemble under the direction of Joel Rubin will perform with special guest composer/clarinetist Michael Winograd on Thursday, November 11th, 2010 at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall.
Michael Winograd is perhaps the leading voice of the younger generation of performers and composers within klezmer, Yiddish and ""New Jewish Music"". Besides his own groups (Michael Winograd Klezmer Ensemble, Infection), he performs regularly with klezmer hip-hop artist Socalled (in residency at UVA Apr. 12-15, 2010), Yiddish cabarettist Daniel Kahn, Frank London's Klezmer Brass All-stars, Budowitz, percussionist Kenny Wollesen, singer Ayelet Gottleib, and Shtreiml, among others.
Winograd (http://www.michaelwinograd.com/), will be in residency at the University of Virginia for the week. Highlights of the residency will be his performance with the UVA Klezmer Ensemble on Thursday, November 11th, and his performance with Yiddish Princess on Sunday, November 14th.
Under the direction of Director of Music Performance and acclaimed clarinetist Joel Rubin, the University of Virginia Klezmer Ensemble focuses on the music of the klezmorim, the Jewish professional instrumentalists of Eastern Europe. The ensemble is made up of both undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and other members of the greater Charlottesville community, and is dedicated to exploring klezmer and other Jewish musical traditions from the 18th century to the present.
Tickets for the Klezmer Ensemble with Michael Winograd are $10 for the general public, $5 for students and free for UVA students who purchase tickets at least one day in advance. Tickets may be purchased at The University of Virginia Arts Box Office, (434) 924-3376, 12:00-5:00p.m. weekdays in the lobby of the UVA Drama Building at 109 Culbreth Road, or on-line at www.artsboxoffice.virginia.edu
