Join author Randy Davila as he discusses Gnosticism: The Mystical Origins of Christianity. “The Origins of Christianity are far different from what most people believe,” says Davila. Davila argues that the Catholic Church expelled the Gnostics, whom he says were the original followers of Jesus, and labeled their writings as heretical. “If the Gnostics had prevailed instead of the Catholics, Christianity, and the world, would look far different than it does today.”

Too late to attend Mr. Davila's discussion, but I already know that at least one of the beliefs of the Gnostics was addressed by the apostle John in 1 John 4:2,3. Roman Catholics did not invent this perspective of gnosticism. Gnosticism denies the incarnation of God as the Son. In so doing, it denies the true efficacy of the atonement since, if Jesus is not God, He could not atone for all of mankind and we would still be lost in our sins. 1 John 4: 2,3. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3but every spirit that does not acknowledge (confess) Jesus is not from God.
