Annual Spinach Festival brings family fun to Lenexa

Created as a celebration of Lenexa’s farming history, the Spinach Festival draws thousands of visitors from around the area to Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park each year to browse 80 art/fine craft and antique booths, and to enjoy a wide variety of family activities, live entertainment and spinach-themed festivities and contests.

Come enjoy a sampling of the world’s largest spinach salad, dine at the expanded food court and plan for a day of fun for kids of all ages. Activities are planned for even very young children with events like the Swee’pea Baby Crawling Contest and the new Diaper Decorating Contest. The first 750 attendees will receive a free Spinach Festival tote bag, provided by Hy-Vee.

The spinach recipe contest is a festival favorite, where adults ages 18 and over can enter their best spinach recipes in four categories for a chance to win cash prizes. Entry forms and details are available on the spinach festival web page.

The Spinach Festival will be held on Saturday, September 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $1 for adults; children under 13 are free. Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park is located at 87th Street Parkway and Lackman Road in Lenexa. Satellite parking is available at City Hall located at 87th Street Parkway and Monrovia, and the business park located at the southeast corner of 95th and Lackman. A free, continuous shuttle service will be offered to and from those locations.

The festival is organized by the City of Lenexa in partnership with the Lenexa Historical Society, and is presented by 94.9 KCMO. More information, including a schedule of activities, is available on the city website at www.ci.lenexa.ks.us. For questions, contact the Lenexa Community Center at (913) 541-0209.
