The Machinery Tool Shop exhibit displays vintage belt-driven machines, which are often running courtesy of dedicated volunteers. There are samples of larger machines and tools, including a Duplex Steam Pump invented in 1841 by Henry R. Washington that was an important breakthrough in the Industrial Revolution. Another important invention in Baltimore documented here is the first Submarine, in 1897 by Simon Lake at Columbia Iron Works and Drydock Company. This submarine, named The Argonut, sailed from Norfolk to New York and was the first successful operation of a full-sized submarine in the United States. Also on display is an original White & Middleton Co. engine, dedicated to long-time Board Member and friend of the BMI, Edward L. Middleton.
