Irvine Institute for Environmental Education - MARYLAND CAVES: EXPLORING NATURE'S BASEMENT, 2 Sessions. Maryland caving is not as well known as neighboring Virginia and West Virginia; however, our State is home to more than 100 caves. Western Maryland cuts right though the "cave country" of the great Appalachian Valley, an arc of limestone sandwiched between the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains. Learn all about caves, cave formation and the unique lives of cave critters in Maryland as well as some of the problems they are facing today. Saturday's field trip will include a trip to Crystal Grottoes in Washington County, Maryland's only commercial cave, and to a small cave along the C & O Canal towpath. Participants will carpool. Instructor: Robert Mardiney, Director of Education, Irvine Nature Center. Fee: $35 members, $50 non-members. Dates/Times: Wednesday, November 3, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, November 6; 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Irvine Nature Center, 11201 Garrison Forest Road, Owings Mills, MD 21117 443-738-9200 www.ExploreNature.org
