A Central California family will present an up-to-the-minute report on medical missions and health care issues in the Republic of Armenia.
The Jacob M. Khushigian Family will speak at the First Armenian Presbyterian Church, 430 South First Street at Huntington Boulevard, in Fresno.
The multimedia presentation will take place in the Church Sanctuary at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2009, and will be followed by a fellowship reception. The ministry event is free and open to the public.
The four-member Khushigian Family was part of a 20-person team that traveled to northern Armenia in the first two weeks of August 2009. The
medical mission was based in the epicenter of the massive 1988 earthquake that took 25,000 lives in the ancient nation.
The team, including three physicians, two registered nurses, one physician’s assistant student, and ancillary staff, set up free ambulatory clinics for impoverished residents of the cities of Spitak and Stepanavan. The team treated more than 600 patients with acute and chronic illnesses in Lori Province.
Dr. Albert J. Phillips and his wife, Susan, of Southern California organized the team under the auspices of the Armenian Missionary Association of America. Based in Paramus, New Jersey, the AMAA expresses the love of Christ through words and deeds and helps the Armenian people preserve their faith, culture, and national identity.
The AMAA conducts its work through a Center in Yerevan, capital city of Armenia, as well as 40 other offices in various regions of the Republic and Nagorno-Karabakh. Dr. H. Steven Aharonian is the President of AMAA and Andrew Torigian is the Executive Director.
Reverend Mgrdich Melkonian is Senior Pastor of the host church; Reverend Aren Balabanian is the Associate Pastor; Shant Barsoumian, M.Div. is the pastoral intern; and Thomas Bulger is Chair of the Committee on Missions.
