Modern Orthodox
By: Daniel Goldfarb
In this sharp and snappy romantic comedy, the characters are diametrically opposed (one is Orthodox and the other a "high holiday" Jew), Ben - a self-centered Upper West Side financial consultant with a bit of a mean streak but some great lines, and Hershel ("call me Hersh") - a hyperkinetic diamond sales-man who totes a briefcase, a gun and a bagful of comic neuroses, are thrown together when Ben purchases an engagement ring for his live-in girlfriend and doctor, Hannah. Tension mounts during the negotiation, and to seal the deal, Hershel reluctantly consents when Ben insists he take off his yarmulke.
And that's when the fun begins ... Hershel's life falls apart and Ben and Hannah find themselves trying to put it back together again by finding him a wife. Being a modern couple, they turn to the internet as Matchmaker ...
Enter deadpan Rachel, who is tired of men leering at her at Jewish singles events like The Matzah Ball and wants to get married so that she can finally have sex!
In the end the play leads the characters and the audience to consider the value in how others choose to live their lives, before judging!
