THE City of Fremantle will help launch NAIDOC Week 2006 at 11am on Sunday, July 2, at the Fremantle Town Hall, highlighting this year's theme of "Respect the past - Believe in the future".
Respected Fremantle Nyoongar Neville Collard is the driving force behind the special ceremony, which brings together the broader community in celebrating indigenous culture.
MC Philip Collard will get events under way before a Welcome to Country by Marie Taylor and smoking ceremony from Neville Collard, followed by guest speaker Gladys Yarran who will highlight the importance of NAIDOC Week.
Fremantle Mayor Peter Tagliaferri and Hilton PCYC Manager Senior Constable Ian Abercromby – winner of the 2006 Australia Day Active Citizenship Award for over-25s – will also speak on the day. The Kulbardi Boorndoon Dance Group will then perform before the official flag-raising ceremony.
The City of Fremantle NAIDOC Week launch event has been partly funded by the Indigenous Coordinating Centre. Light refreshments will be served following the ceremony.
