Some 19 thousand 768 thousand tourists visited the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu since it was reopened on April 1 through the first half of this month, the National Institute of Culture (INC) in Cusco.

According to statistics provided by the institution to Andina news agency, until day 14, received 18 thousand 178 visitors (15 thousand 950 foreigners and two thousand Peruvians 228) and day 15 to 590 thousand.

The average daily visits to the historic sanctuary is close to 500 thousand, up to date weather conditions did not cause major inconvenience or for the stay or the movement of tourists.

There were some rains but did not have the intensity registered in January, which caused the river level rise Vilcanota and damaged the railway to Machu Picchu, forcing the closure of two months of this appeal as a precaution.

With regard to the Inca Trail, also reopened on April 1, INC Cusco said it received 992 thousand visitors until Wednesday 14, all of them foreigners.
To date, the railway transport is done in autovagones, but it is expected that from April 19 to operate the train cars, always on the road PiscacuchoÂ-Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo.

The closure of the Inca citadel caused a serious decline of tourism in Cusco, but reopened after the local authorities are confident that in June and July, considered high season, will be restored in full.
