As gods fight over who has the greatest influence on mankind, Love presents this story as proof of her ascendancy: against all opposition, Poppea and Nero marry, and prepare Rome for the coming madness of his reign. With characters made of flesh and blood and ambition, the triumph of Monteverdi is in creating a balance between music and drama and drawing his audience into the lives of real people making choices of terrible consequence.
