For eight weeks, students at the Ernest Ingold Boys and Girls Club in the Haight district of San Francisco have been working to create a large painting of Golden Gate Park, through the Community Walls mural project. Community Walls is a fun and educational program created by Hostelling International USA, that asks youth "What is it like to live in your community?"
The project began with an artistic exploration of the pride of the Club’s community — Golden Gate Park. Students spent time sketching and taking textural rubbings in the park as part of their research to create their painting. After research was completed, the painting easily came to fruition — and through the Community Walls program, everyone involved gained cultural pride and understanding.
To celebrate all of these accomplishments, HI-USA Golden Gate Council is hosting an opening reception at the San Francisco City Center Hostel. Please join us to celebrate and recognize the young artists for the hard work they put into the creation of this beautiful painting. The painting will continue to be on display at the City Center Hostel, so it can serve its purpose of sharing youth perspectives from different San Francisco communities with travelers from around the world.
