The dictionary describes people as a body of persons sharing a culture and the Chatham Arts Gallery show “People” has done just that. It combines painting, pastel, photography, mixed media and sculpture all under the same themes with distinct and dynamic results.

The show spotlights the medium of sculpture and features artists such as Lisa Harrington whose work is an exploration of what it is to be a woman. Harrington often takes inspi-ration from themes in her own life and works them out in clay or bronze and uses it as a cleansing experience and to preserve the moment forever.

Cherie Westmorland is a ceramic sculptor who uses the process of creation as a way to meditate. She works in clay because of its versatility and includes painting, drawing photography and text into the work.

Sculptor John Makowski gets his inspiration from the artists who descended into the cave at the end of a rope, with their suet lamp and manganese sticks 17,000 years ago to inscribe on the rock walls the magic and mythology of their civilization.

The exhibit begins August 2 and will run until the end of September. The gallery is located at 115 Hillsboro St. in Pittsboro, Wednesday - Saturday 11am – 5pm, Sunday 1 – 4pm - First Sunday 12-4
