The ancient stabilized sand dunes of the Burton Mesa and surrounding areas support an exceptional array of unique endemic plants, including manzanitas, monardellas, mountain lilacs, and wallflowers. The Burton Mesa Ecological Reserve and La Purisima Mission State Historic Park manage and preserve more than 6,000 acres of natural plant communities with trails that are open to the public. We will explore the maritime chaparral and Bishop pine communities near Lompoc, and will also stop at Jualachichi Summit near Jalama Beach to see some relictual endemics that are more typical of redwood forests.
