Ploesti Raid April 24, 2010

The German defenses at Ploesti oilfields in Romania were the densest in the world, with over 200 88mm guns and perhaps 300 interceptors. Of the 178 aircraft sent out, 163 made it over target. Of these 54 were lost in action. 300 aircrew were killed, 140 captured, and over 440 were wounded. The casualty rate was 55%, and only one in six bombers was in flyable condition with the mission complete
