Topic 2: Role of PMO in Portfolio Management within SMB enterprises in a Recession Driven Economy

The last decade has witnessed the evolution of Project Management from being a part-time effort into a full-time profession. Project Management is regarded now as a strategic competency for the organization. Accompanying this tactical initiative is a vast amount of intellectual property that must be effectively managed. Thus there is a need for the existence of a Project Management Office (PMO). While the physical existence of PMO is not new, using PMO as a direct enabler to the strategic planning process of the organization is. This perspective is crucial to realizing benefit within the SMB enterprises. The PMO becomes the extended arm of the senior management which then focuses on operational vis-à-vis execution excellence, which in turn aids business continuity even in times of critical change such as now. The PMO becomes the nerve center of project management intelligence and coordination. This talk hopes to provide some insights into why PMOs are crucial to the success of especially projects-driven organizations and also some of the bottle-neck issues that exist and attempts to identify some of the root problems that executives, project managers and the PMO face. This talk will also give the participants a glimpse of how organizational portfolio management can be used as a strategic weapon.
