INFO*- The Progressive Education Consortium(PEC)is a collaboration among local alternative schools and learning communities such as Ann Arbor Academy, Clonlara, Little Lake Learning Community, New Point Learning Center, and Rudolf Steiner. The PEC is holding it's first lecture in a series of talks about varied topics in alternative education. Our first event is being held at the Little Lake Learning Community (LLLC) and features two education professors from Eastern Michigan University-
Linda Williams: "Teaching Literacy for Democracy" and
Joe Bishop: "Learning by Doing: Implementing Democracy in Schools"
This Event is Free and Open to the Public. We Hope To See You There!
Professor Bishop has extensive experience working with educators and schools, especially in emerging democracies, to foster democratic education. In his talk about the urgent need for implementing real democracy in schools he will discuss key ways in which young people in schools can be empowered to take control of their lives and education. Numerous examples will be provided to illustrate how younger people in schools, with the assistance of older members of the school community, can conduct all aspects of their schooling. By running the school themselves, young people will simultaneously acquire knowledge and skills that go beyond traditional schooling thus preparing them to continue a democratic life after schooling.
And, you will get to see what democracy is like in action! Little Lake Students will model how they vote using consensus at an All-School Meeting!
