Free Dementia Lecture Thursday, June 30th
at San Clemente Villas Discusses
“Validating the Older Person with Dementia”
San Clemente, California—The public, including care givers to older loved ones and professionals, are invited to a lecture Thursday, June 30th, 8-10 am, at San Clemente Villas by the Sea, (Villas) to discuss how to connect with the person behind the dementia and step into their reality. CEU credit is offered for RCFE administrators and RN's/LVN's.
Gerontologist Dr. Jane L. Mahakian, previously director of Elder Care Programs at the University of California, San Francisco, and CEO/founder of Aging Matters, Inc., conducts the lecture.
Dr. Mahakian explains that, “Dementia is a decline of reasoning, memory, and other mental/cognitive abilities. This decline eventually impairs the ability to carry out daily tasks such as driving; household chores, and even personal care such as bathing, dressing, and feeding.” One can still reach the person with profound dementia through understanding the person's language and reality.”
The event coincides with the new Memory Enhancement Program (MEP) being offered to residents at the Villas’ deluxe assisted care community. Unlike some memory enhancement programs, this one is research-based using only well-proven techniques.
Participating MEP residents of the Villas attend daily memory improvement classes, conducted by Coordinator Diana Sanchez, that are loaded with cues and reminders. These provoke those residents to keep their minds and bodies in motion to help them remain as independent as possible as long as possible.
“There are classes, twice a day, covering virtually any kind of cognitive deficiency,” says Dr. Mahakian. “You want those in MEP, even ones with mild cognitive impairment, to be as regularly stimulated as often as possible. It is so true that using a mind helps forestall losing a mind.”
Individual supportive counseling is provided for each participant, weekly testing is done to verify progress being made, and there are monthly support groups for residents and families.
Professionals may be eligible for 2 CEU Credits. For health care professionals, this workshop has been approved by the California State Board of Registered Nurses BRN for RN's. LVN's and CNA's (#13719). RCFE administrators will receive 2 CEU Credits (#1000920-740-2). Pre-registration sign-in and evaluation turned in at the end of the conference is required to obtain credits.
