In observance of National Emergency Preparedness Week, the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) in partnership with Qwest Communications will provide 500 free corded landline phones to area residents on a first-come first-serve basis.
As 9-1-1 call frequency rises with the temperature, the Connect for Safety campaign educates consumers on the potentially life-saving benefits of having a non-cordless landline phone in the home for its reliability and accurate emergency response information when dialing 9-1-1.
Emergency services experts urge consumers to keep at least one non-cordless phone with landline service in their homes in case of an emergency. When calling 9-1-1 from a landline phone in an enhanced 9-1-1 service area, the number and address of the caller is automatically displayed for emergency dispatchers. Immediate location identification may still be limited with other phone services.
