Sing in the Spring with the Chorale
Broadway and Opera Favorites!
First Rehearsal: January 18
Do you like to sing? Can you carry a tune? Do you enjoy performing in front of live audiences? Would you like to make new friends while singing a range of music from challenging classical pieces to dynamic modern works to popular Broadway and opera favorites, all right here in the Santa Ynez Valley?
If the answer to any one of these questions is YES!, then join the Santa Ynez Valley Master Chorale in rehearsals for its Spring concert series, “The Best of Broadway and Opera,” Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 29-30 and May 1, at the Church at the Crossroads in Buellton.
On Tuesday, January 18, the Chorale, under the baton of music director Chris Bowman, will start rehearsals for its upcoming season of spring music, “The Best of Broadway and Opera,” at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Janin Acres. Last year, 65 singers practiced from 7:30 to 9:30 every Tuesday night in the months leading up to the performance of “Music Through the Ages” and were joined by the Chorale Orchestra at the Spring concerts.
The Chorale is looking for singers of all ages, in all parts, and with all levels of singing and performance experience, from amateurs to seasoned professionals. Don’t be shy—many of the Chorale’s singers started out with no more experience than singing in their high school choruses…or even in their showers.
Group auditions (you won’t have to sing alone) will be held at 7:15 the first night of rehearsal (January 18).
Later in the season, the Youth Chorale will begin its rehearsals, also on Tuesday, February 22, from 6:30-7:15 p.m. and will join the Master Chorale in singing the Broadway and opera favorites. It is a nice opportunity for parents and children who enjoy singing and performing together.
“I am looking forward to continuing the Chorale's mission of bringing quality musical performances to the Santa Ynez Valley throughout the coming year,” said Terryl Bunn, who succeeded Mary Jane West-Delgado as the Chorale’s new president. “We would love to recruit more male voices to join us for the spring concerts. The Broadway and opera music will be fun for everyone!”
Ms. Bunn, as Youth Chorale coordinator, added, “We had 16 wonderful youth singers for our holiday concerts. We’re expecting an even bigger group of youth singers for our spring concerts!”
During the recent Holiday concerts, the Chorale, Youth Chorale and Orchestra performed Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Baroque masterpiece, “Te Deum,” with Valley soloists Adam Haws and Amy Calvert. The concert also featured two world premieres, “Law of Love” and “Cavatina,” with music composed by Mr. Bowman and lyrics by Catalina McIsaac.
As part of the Founder’s Day celebration, the Chorale performed at La Purisima Mission on December 8 in front of 600 appreciative audience members, a beautiful evening program set in the old Mission. In November, as it does every year, the Chorale sang traditional and patriotic American music as part of the SYV Veterans Day program held at the Solvang Veterans Memorial Hall.
Coming in February, the Chorale, as a fundraiser, will offer “Singing Valentines” to sweethearts, mothers and fathers, friends and co-workers all around the Valley. On Independence Day July 4, the Chorale will perform a program of American traditional songs in Solvang, free to all.
The Chorale will hold its largest fundraiser, Valley Idol, in March and April, giving amateur singers an opportunity to perform in front of family, friends and a large audience. The top three contestants will receive cash prizes, and because the Valley Idol is a fundraiser, votes may be purchased, but the official judges will have a say in the outcome.
