SYV Master Chorale Celebrates with Holiday Concert Series
The Santa Ynez Valley Master Chorale, Youth Chorale and Orchestra will celebrate the season with a holiday concert series of two evening performances on Friday, December 17 and Saturday, December 18, both at 7:30 p.m., and a Sunday matinee at 3:00 on December 19. All performances are at the Church at the Crossroads in Buellton.
The chorale and orchestra led by music director Chris A. Bowman will present the early Baroque masterpiece, “Te Deum” by Marc Antoine Charpentier. Returning to perform solos on the “Te Deum” are Chorale favorites soprano Helena von Rueden, soprano Amy Calvert, tenor Adam Haws, and bass/baritone Nikolaus Schiffmann.
Two world premieres with music by award-winning composer Mr. Bowman will also be featured: “The Law of Love” with words by award-winning lyricist Catalina McIsaac, and the instrumental piece, “Cavatina”.
The program will also include “Let Their Celestial Concerts All Unite,” the final chorus of Georg Handel’s oratorio “Samson,” and “Swell the Full Chorus,” which ends the second part of Handel’s oratorio, “Solomon”
Among other selections, the chorale will perform the lively Renaissance carol “Gaudete;” the beautiful 14th century German melody, “In Dulci Jubilo;” the 16th century gentle German hymn, “Lo How A Rose E’er Blooming;” and “What Child Is This,” an English carol written in 1865 and set to the traditional 16th century English tune, “Greensleeves”.
The youth chorale, with 15 singers from fourth to eighth grade, will join the chorale to sing many of these carols and others from around the world.
Combining all their forces, the master chorale, youth chorale and orchestra will end the concert with “A Christmas Festival,” originally composed by Leroy Anderson for The Boston Pops. Mr. Anderson is well-known to American audiences as the composer of delightful melodies such as, “The Syncopated Clock,” “The Typewriter,” “Bugler’s Holiday” and the Christmas favorite, “Sleigh Ride.”
Tickets are $15 for adults, and $12 for seniors 65 and over, and youth 18 and under. Tickets are available at the Book Loft in Solvang, El Rancho Marketplace in Santa Ynez, Sunrise Coffee House in Buellton, from Chorale members and at the door.
