Join Cornell Scientists Paul Chirik and Frank "Turf Guy" Rossi for a "chemical cocktail" exploring nitrogen, its many uses, advantages, and disadvantages.
Dr. Chirik will talk about how the conversion of nitrogen from our atmosphere to fertilizer has been a double edged sword - it has alleviated famines yet resulted in overpopulation of the planet. We are now addicted to this technology which is also linked to fossil fuel resources.
Dr Rossi will share how nitrogen is juice for the life of a grass plant. It is the New York Yankees of nutrients, i.e., when its right its great, when it's wrong it is the Bronx Zoo. He takes take an inner city look at nitrogen, turfgrass, water and sports. Be prepared for a few bronx cheers!

About Science Cabaret:
Ithaca's Science Cabaret is sponsored by the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research (http://www.bti.cornell.edu), a world leader in plant biology.
Ithaca's Science Cabaret was inspired by the Café Scientifique movement, which started in Europe in the late 1990s and has spread rapidly. Cafés Scientifiques are informal talks in bars, cafes and other public venues that give like-minded people a chance to discuss current and sometimes controversial topics in science. In Ithaca we meet one Tuesday a month at the Lost Dog Cafe on 112 South Cayuga St. The Ithaca Science Cabaret is organized by local professors, graduate students and members of the Ithaca community.
Science Cabaret is open to anyone and everyone. While not all topics may be of interest to children, they are welcome to attend.
Bring your appetite for food, drinks and knowledge!
