The play re-imagines the Romeo and Juliet story from the perspective of the story's 'losers.' That is, the central characters in Searching for Romeo are Rosaline and Paris, two minor characters in Shakespeare's play who are rejected by Romeo and Juliet, respectively. By shifting the focus to the rejected pair, Searching for Romeo questions our society's image of Romeo and Juliet as ideal romantic lovers. And the experience of Rosaline and Paris is adly true for many of us: the sense that they're minor characters in some grander story, that there's a world of passion and romance out there but somehow reserved for other people.
