Enjoy the beauty and serenity of a late summer evening on Plum Island in relative solitude after the crowds and heat of the day have gone. Tens of thousands of shorebirds stop to feed in the area's extensive salt marshes on their way from Arctic breeding grounds to South American wintering grounds. Learn how these birds have adapted to marathon migrations, and how to use comparative size, shape, habitat and behavior to aid your shorebird ID skills. Plum Island is also a staging area for fall swallow migration; flocks of swallows gather on the island to feed and prepare for their long treks to Central and South America. We will experience the wonder of thousands of swallows swirling in the air, darkening the sky, before they drop into the marsh to roost for the evening. Unforgettable! - - Open to anyone age 16 or older. Registration is required. Call 781-259-2200 for details.
