Southern Oregon University’s Department of Performing Arts presents the SOU Faculty Brass in an evening of West Coast brass music on Monday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall. The concert is part of the annual Southern Oregon Arts & Research (SOAR) Festival (May 13-17) held on the campus of the University, celebrating achievements in academic and artistic research and creativity. The Music Recital Hall is located at 450 S. Mountain Ave., between Ashland and Henry Streets.
The concert includes music written by SOU faculty composers Jeff Richmond, Mark Elliot Jacobs and Todd Barton, as well as local composer I’lana S. Cotton, plus Darius Milhaud and west coast composer Alex Shapiro. The program offers the audience an evening of diverse music for brass instruments, including two world premières: Dr. Richmond’s Rumination and Dr. Jacob’s Environments are both brass trios written for the event.
Also featured are two works for electronics and brass instruments. Dr. Hutton will perform Deep for horn and pre-recorded electronics by Alex Shapiro, and Dr. Jacobs has incorporated electronics into his new work, Environments. Dr. Jacobs will perform Darius Milhaud’s Concertino d'Hiver for trombone and piano with Jody French accompanying. In addition the ensemble will present the following brass quintets; I’lana S. Cotton’s Speed Trap, Todd Barton’s Canzona and Dr. Jacobs’ Chicago Scenes.
